Melt Values for US Silver Coins Fall for Third Straight Week

Continuing a prolonged trend, silver and the associated melt values for US silver coins finished down again this week marking the third such result to occur in a row. As if that news was not bad enough for some, the precious metal also slid to a new 2.5 year low earlier in the week.

Silver did manage to recover a significant portion of the loss by the end of the seven day period, but still returned a drop of 0.6% ($0.14) from where it was last Friday. The London Fix for Silver for today, May 24, 2013 was $22.38 an ounce.

Precious Metals Prices
May 24, 2013
London Fix Weekly Change
Gold 1,390.25 +$21.50 +1.6%
Silver $22.38 -$0.14 -0.6%
Platinum $1,455.00 -$15.00 -1.0%
Palladium $729.00 -$7.00 -1.0%

Silver was not the only precious metal to realize losses during the week. Both platinum and palladium dove 1.0% with losses of $15 an ounce and $7 an ounce, respectively. Those losses were higher than seen by silver with its aforementioned 0.6% drop. Treading into positive territory this week was gold which climbed 1.6% up with an increase of $21.50 an ounce.

The trend of sliding silver values led the US Mint to lower the pricing of several annual sets earlier this week. Among those seeing new lower prices were the 2012 and 2013 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Sets. These sets each contain 0.90420 troy ounces of silver giving them an approximate melt value of $20.24 based on today’s Fix of $22.38 an ounce.

Monday was a tough day for the precious metal as the Fix came in at $21.66 an ounce. This was down $0.86 from the Fix of the previous Friday and marked a new 2.5 year low for the precious metal. The Fix recovered on Tuesday to $22.44 and rose even higher on Wednesday to $22.62 before falling some on Thursday to $22.47 an ounce. It fell a bit more on Friday to the previously mentioned $22.38.

At $22.38, the precious metal is up $0.72 from the 2013 low set earlier in the week on May 20, 2013 of $21.66 an ounce. Before this week, the 2013 low was held by the Fix of May 16, 2013 which was $22.26 an ounce.

Looking at the flip side, the precious metal is now down $9.85 from the 2013 high set on January 23m 2013. That high came in at $32.23 an ounce.
