1956 Mint Sets

1956 Mint Sets are something of an anomaly for such sets. The year marked the first time in recent history in which the U.S. Mint facility in San Francisco did not strike circulating coinage. As such, the 1956 Mint Sets only contained uncirculated quality examples of coins struck at the Philadelphia facility and the Denver facility.

The 1956 release was issued as part of the "double mint set" era in which two examples of each coin from each facility were included. This meant that each set contained two Lincoln Cents struck in Philadelphia, two Lincoln Cents struck in Denver, two Jefferson Nickels struck in Philadelphia, two Jefferson Nickels struck in Denver, and so on. The exception to this was the Franklin Half Dollar as only the Philadelphia facility struck them that year. Accordingly, only two (P) Franklin Half Dollars are found in the set and no Denver examples.
