Like previous such sets, the 2009 Quarters Silver Proof Set contained 90% silver proof quality examples of the circulating quarters issued that year. However, 2009 saw the debut (and only year) of the DC & US Territories Quarters Program.
This program differed from the previous 50-State Quarters series in that a total of six new strikes were issued as part of it. Under the previous program, only five new strikes were released annually. Accordingly, the 2009 silver proof set included a total of six quarters instead of the five quarters seen in previous years.
All six of the quarter dollars were encased in the same protective lens. This lens was then placed inside an illustrated box.
The six quarters of the set were each struck to proof quality at the U.S. Mint’s facility in San Francisco.
