Silver Coin Melt Values Down Slightly in April

Silver Coin Melt Values ended April 2014 in negative territory as the silver market continued its slump into a second month. While the losses were relatively minor, the cumulative effect over the last two months is approaching double digits.

For April, silver trading ended on the 30th with a London Fix of $19.28 an ounce. This equates to a drop of 69¢ from the Fix at the end of March, or a loss of 0.34% based on those end of the month figures.

Averages for the month were more depressing. The March average London Fix was $20.7357 an ounce with April only averaging $19.7095. Comparing the two shows a decline in the market average of $1.0262 per ounce, or a difference of -4.9%.

March values were also down listing a dip of 6.1%. Adding the losses for the last two months (March and April) shows the precious metal and associated melt values now down $1.99 an ounce from the end of February, or a negative 9.4%.

Year to date comparisons are also showing negative results, although not as significant. Using the last trading day of April’s Fix compared to the Fix at the end of 2013 offers a loss of just 22¢, or -1.1%.

  • Palladium ended the month at $803.00 an ounce rising 3.2% for the month
