Silver Coin Melt Values Surge 19.2% in January

Silver Coin Melt Values surged in January with the precious metal showing an astonishing increase of 19.2% for the month. That significant jump also translated to other precious metals, although some of their results were more tempered.

The London Spot for Silver was $33.60 an ounce for January 31, 2012. In comparison, the Spot was just $28.18 a month earlier on December 30, 2011 – the last trading day of the year. That equates to a gain of $5.42 an ounce, or the previously mentioned 19.2%.

The chart below shows the monthly gains for gold, silver, platinum and palladium. As can be seen, silver trended at the top of the results:

Investors have reason to be happy during the month as all four of the leading precious metals showed significant increases. However, silver outstripped the other three with its 19.2% increase. It was followed by platinum with a 17.6% rise, gold with a positive 10.8% and finally palladium up 8.8%.

Investors will likely be happier, however, if this turns into a lasting trend for the metals. 2011 saw precious metals rise during the year, only to end down in comparison to 2010, with the exception of gold. Gold managed to finish 2011 up 12% from the previous year.

Silver’s high for 2012 is currently held by the last day of January with its $33.60 an ounce. The low was set on the 3rd of January with $28.78 an ounce.
