After Silver Coin Melt Values fell to a new low for the year last week, the precious metal showed a slight improvement this week. Looking at the Friday to Friday London Fix for silver shows the metal up 0.9% based on the seven day comparison.
For reference, the London Fix for today (July 6, 2012) was $27.32 an ounce. This was up $0.24 from the Fix last Friday of $27.08 an ounce. Last week saw an increase in the precious metal as well with a slight bump of 1.0%.

Once again, the four precious metals shown in the chart above were split in their performance during the week. Platinum led the increase with a jump of 1.5% followed by the aforementioned silver increase of 0.9%. Palladium was almost flat losing $1 during the week for a decline of 0.2% with gold shedding 0.7%.
Unlike markets in the United States, it was a full trading week in London. Silver spent the first four days of the week showing some strong gains before a massive down-swing on Friday. On Monday, the precious metal had a Fix of $27.36 an ounce, up from the previous Friday’s Fix of $27.08. Tuesday increased to $27.92 with Wednesday jumping to $28.11. Thursday was even stronger at $28.33 an ounce before Friday’s Fix dropped $1.01 to $27.32.
The low for 2012 was established last week when the Fix came in at $26.72 an ounce. This Friday’s Fix is up $0.60 from that low, or +2.2%. Silver is still down significantly from the 2012 high established on February 29th of $37.23 an ounce. Doing the math shows the precious metal down $9.91 from that high, or -26.6%.
