Silver Down 3.8% First Full Week in March

The market for the precious metal silver ended down on Friday compared to a week ago bringing silver coin melt values along with it. The London Fix for Silver for Friday, March 9, 2012 was $33.87 an ounce.

In comparison, the spot last week Friday (March 2, 2012) was $35.21 an ounce. This equates to a decline of $1.34 an ounce, or down 3.8%.

As the chart above shows, it was a tough week for precious metals. All four of those listed saw declines with the largest seen in silver with its 3.8% drop. The smallest loss was seen in gold with just a 1.1% decline.

Focusing just on how silver performed for the week shows mostly a steady decline for the white metal. Monday’s spot was $34.18 an ounce which was down over a dollar from the $35.21 seen the previous Friday. Then Tuesday continued the loss with $33.22 followed by another drop on Wednesday to $33.17. Silver then rallied on Thursday to $34.09 before the end of the week dip to the aforementioned $33.87 an ounce.

Silver’s 2012 high was established on February 29, 2012 with $37.23 an ounce. The low for the year was established on the first trading day for the year on January 3rd with $28.78.
