Silver Set Melt Values Up Slightly First Full Week of February

Marginal improvements were realized this week by Silver Set Melt Values as the precious metal rose slightly. Based on the Friday to Friday London Fix, silver rose $0.09 for the week.

That increase equates to a gain of 0.3%. The London Fix for Silver for today, February 8, 2013 was $31.52 an ounce.

Looking across the board at precious metals shows an overall positive week. Of the four metals shown in the chart above, three realized increases (albeit mostly minimal ones). Gold was down a relatively minor $0.75 an ounce. Showing improvement for the week was palladium which rose 0.1%, followed by the aforementioned silver increase of 0.3%. Palladium had a notable jump up 1.6% as the precious metal rose $27 an ounce.

Silver started the week with a slight increase as the Monday Fix came in at $31.51 an ounce, up from the previous Friday’s $31.43. A large gain was realized on Tuesday when the Fix came in at $32.01 an ounce before a correction occurred on Wednesday taking the Fix down to $31.70. Thursday had a slight bump up to $31.75 before this Friday’s Fix of $31.52 an ounce.

At $31.52, silver up considerably from the 2013 low established on January 4th. That low was set at $29.32 an ounce. This gives this Friday’s Fix a gain of $2.20 from that low, or an increase of 7.5%.

Conversely, the precious metal is down from the 2013 high set on January 23rd. That high came in at $32.23 an ounce. Doing the math shows this Friday’s Fix is down $0.71 from that high, or 2.2%.

  1. I have over 100 pounds of jefferson head nickels, wanted to know if you melt them, or how I go about getting them melted. Or would it be better to keep them as is for value.

      The benefit of them being in their original form is the fact that it is easy for anyone to determine their worth (either based on their face value or based on their content). Thus you have liquidity on your side by keeping them as is. Were you to melt them, the buyer would have to be able to determine the composition of what you presented them before being able to ascertain a value.
