Silver Starts the New Year Down 2.8%

The new year is off to a poor start when it comes to Silver Coin Melt Values. They finished the first part of 2013 down 2.8% (or -$0.83) based on the Friday to Friday London Fix.

It was a short week for trading owing to the new year with a Fix for silver only posted four days this week as the market was not open on January 1st. The London Fix for Silver for today, January 4, 2013 was $29.32 an ounce.

The short week was a tough one for most of the precious metals. Of the four shown, only one ended in positive territory. It was platinum which rose $30 an ounce, or an even 2.0%. Gold posted the smallest loss of the four metals with a drop of just 0.6%. It was followed by palladium which fell 2.1% and then the aforementioned silver decline of 2.8%.

Monday, December 31, 2012 saw silver drop to $29.95 an ounce after the previous Friday’s Fix of $30.15. After the holiday, the Fix on Wednesday, January 2nd rose significantly to $30.87 an ounce. It rose slightly more on Thursday to a Fix of $30.91 before falling to today’s $29.32 an ounce.

With just a few days crossed off this year’s calendar, the 2013 low is now held by today’s (January 4, 2013) Fix of $29.32 an ounce. For comparison, last year’s low was set on July 12, 2012 with a Fix of $26.67 an ounce.

The new 2013 high was set on January 3rd with its Fix of $30.91. Comparing again to last year shows this year’s high still down from last year’s high of $37.23 an ounce set on February 29, 2012.
